Winter Storm

Photography by Jonathan Tang

I can’t believe it’s already spring and unsurprisingly I have yet again taken another hiatus and failed to blog for the past 4 months. I’m so sorry that I keep making empty promises, with school constantly piling up it’s just so easy to make excuses. Before winter is officially over, I wanted to share at least a few posts of how I attempted to stay warm this past winter. This year’s Canadian winter was again a harsh one, with many snow storms and even a school closure; heavy jackets, winter boots and lots and lots of sweaters was a basic necessity. It is always a challenge for us Canadians who commute to not look like a Michelin Tire man or a super stuffed dumpling. The key is to find a super warm jacket (most go for Canada Goose) and super warm but thin layers.

My favourite super warm layer has been this Colt Sweater from Aritzia, it is made of 100% wool and not itchy at all unlike some other wool sweaters. Just remember not to put it in the dryer or you’ll end up with a child’s sweater! The reason I love this sweater is it’s cut is super unique with a bit of high-low going on, a little flare at the bottom and a wide neckline perfect for matching with chunky necklaces (my fave accessories)

Since just wearing a sweater and black pants is just too dull and boring, adding a cute skirt with leggings is a nice change. It definitely ups your game from a typical everyday girl look into a chic fashionista! I found this unique Julina skirt at Club Monaco; it uses a special material that I call “scuba” because the feel and sheen reminds me of a scuba diver’s clothes. I can imagine adding this piece to any date night outfit and is a perfect winter-spring and fall-winter transition piece.

I would say the major two essentials this past winter is 1) A Blanket Scarf & 2) Colourful Mittens. Thank goodness for blanket scarfs being a major accessory in fashion, without it my face would’ve definitely frozen to death countless times this winter. It’s also good for car naps without grabbing an extra pillow. Looks like it’s too late to buy one in stores now and I’m not sure if it’s staying in trend for next year too, but here are some alternatives from Dynamite and Aritzia. I recall seeing almost every girl on the streets with one of those Aritzia scarves. Colourful mittens definitely brightens up any dull winter ensemble, so these pink ones I got last year are my go-to pair.

Scroll down for more pictures of my chic winter outfit and pictures of me trying to “swim” through the snow.

A Walk in the Park

Long time no post! I have realized that it’s been a long time since I posted something. I have been meaning to these past two months, but every time I plan to write a post school work seems to finds its way into my stressful life. I am so sorry that it seems that I have neglected my wonderful readers. This time I genuinely promise that I will have at least weekly (maybe even biweekly) posts in the new year.

As some of you may know, once every year I spend 4 months of my time building my resume through co-op. This year it seems that I will not be staying home, but going to my dream city, New York! This is a milestone in my life that I want to share with all my readers, so a weekly posts will come your way for sure. IN ADDITION, a special project will be launched starting the new year! Please support this special project when it launches on New Years Eve Dec 31, 2013 at midnight!

Now for the reason why you are here, my OOTD! My kindred spirited friend wanted to take pictures of me after her photo shoot with her special someone (cue the CUTENESS). It was her first time using a DSLR so hope you like her photography skills as much as I did!

DSC_0142When these photos were taken, it was slightly chilly, thus the presence of the scarf. Nothing like the cold weather we have been getting here in Canada. This scarf is so warm and soft like a bunny, it will definitely be making an appearance in other posts in the future.

IDK what I’m laughing at. Must have been funny

I wish I could wear these shorts everyday, they are simply stunning. I couldn’t pass them up in the change room even though $60 is super pricey for a pair of shorts. UNLESS they were made of real gold, then that’s a STEAL!

OHHH the sun is coming up and I stand in awe of the BRIGHTNESS

Bye bye for now. I hope you enjoyed this impromptu OOTD post. I’ll post back in two weeks after these finals are over.

Fall in School

This may not have dawned on me yet, but this will be the last fall term I will be in school. If you are from Waterloo and/or doing co-op you will understand what I mean. For those of you who don’t, my University program includes a co-op portion where you work for 4 months during odd school schedules. My unique program has five years – this being my fourth – although I have 4 terms of school left, this will be my last fall term in school. EVER! I think I will only start regretting it by December, but for the time being, let me reminiscent with a keepsake OOTD of falling leaves, Waterloo sunset and my scholarly backpack.

For my avid readers, I just realized I haven’t officially posted anything for a while now. I am so sorry for my delinquency. I have a few sets of posts on the backburner, so you will be fashion updated soontimes!

This OOTD will be very simple, but also very ME. It’s comfortable enough for school, has leather (my fave), and heels suitable for my short stature. These DULL days full of no shopping and constant studying has left me researching for new fall outfit inspirations. From observation, it seems that a tights combo is very trendy, paired with any summer shorts or cute flowy dress. However, it is super cold in Canada, so wearing just that would freeze you to death and make you look downright crazy. You can opt to add a thick, chunky sweater, a bomber jacket, or a leather jacket (as I have done here). Define that waist with a braided belt, classy watch, backpack and heels and you are READY FOR SCHOOL!

Two words: Oh gosh..

Gotta say this pic is really nice

TIP: 1) If those heels are hurting your feet while walking to shoes, either they are too tight or the insole is too hard. I would advise wearing socks until the insides of your shoes weather down. Another tip if your heels are too tight are to wear thick soles and blow dry the.

IMG_4692 IMG_4739 IMG_4745 IMG_4729 IMG_4728

TIP: 2) Braided belts are my fave because you can easily adjust them during the day, after you eat too much or drank too much coffee. You just need to unbelt to the next braid instead of all the way to the next whole. I think these belts are most versatile because they work for any waist size.

Pstt. Did you notice that I added some black shorts underneath the dress? It would be a good idea to include if you were to try this look yourself, don’t wanna be exposin’!

What’s your thoughts on this new blogging/photography style? How do you dress up for school?

Photo Reel: Canada Day Fireworks

This is a long awaited post, but I couldn’t just throw away all these pictures and wait for next year’s fireworks, so here is the Canada Day Fireworks from July 1st. This year, I was able to be in Waterloo, Ontario and watch the free fireworks hosted by this small city. I innocently did not know what to expect, but as we walked closer and closer to the field, we saw how big of an event this actually was.

DSC_1229 DSC_1231 DSC_1232 DSC_1242

It was much more crowded than I expected it to be, so we decided to sit on the risky, 50+ degree sloped hill and enjoy the fireworks from there. After taking a seat, I couldn’t move for a good 30 minutes in fear that I would slide down the hill. I hope you will enjoy these fireworks as much as I did! Let’s relive some fireworks:

My favourite!

I know I’m craving some fireworks right now, or maybe it’s more appropriate after my finals… Until next time!

Summer Metallics

These days, it’s hot and humid. Weather I just don’t want to walk in if I don’t want to sweat buckets and bathtubs. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating just a wee bit, but it is 30 + degrees everyday in Canada, so I can’t imaging how hot it would be in Florida or LA O.O

I have been having a crazy week of group projects and expect to have a “hell” week at school next week, so before I lose motivation, I will post this quick OOTD post for you . (Also because I am bored since my parents are taking a call while they are Skype-ing me T.T)

Alone, this outfit could pass as a “Business Casual” outfit that you can wear to family dinner outfit, a date outfit (just change to higher heels and better shoes), a business conference outfit. By adding different jackets, accessories and shoes, we can achieve a more casual or more formal outfit. Whatever floats your boat. For more formal wear, opt for a collared shirt/blouse instead or add a black blazer and switch to some closed-toe shoes.

For a more casual outfit, we can add a sweater of your liking or the PLAID shirt (a piece making its comeback as an accessory, tied around your waist or draped over your shoulders). Here’s some examples.

In case you haven’t noticed, my skirt has some metallic sheen to it, the gladiators are a chrome metallic colour and as usual I have my arm candy in tow. If you would like a close up of the skirt, send me a message and I’ll show you the close up of the metallic sheen and the intricate pattern.

Hopefully, I’ll have some time soon to go through my firework pictures from Canada Day and make a picture reel of fireworks!

Until later.

[Review] Nail Polish Canada

Hey Y’All! Long time no post!

I know I promised a tutorial post today, but there are some technical difficulties posting it. To compensate, I will give you a review of package I just picked up in the mail from Nail Polish Canada.

Then I will post an OOTD from exam to interview, what an awesome day that is eh? I just finished two midterms this weekend, explaining my two week MIA. After these two posts, I may be MIA for another week to finish off my midterms. Sorry for the long wait and I hope you will continue to support me!

With the recent outbursts of new nail polish collections from OPI, ESSIE and ZOYA, I thought I should try some of these new collectibles and add more colours to my growing “salon”! I recently discovered a Canadian nail polish site and thought it would be great to try out these new collections. From my last haul post from ShoeDazzle, you know that I am pretty concerned about extra hidden shipping fees and taxes, so buying from Canadian sites is optimal. What’s great is this company ships from Downtown Toronto, so if you live within a 250km radius of Toronto, you should be able to get your package within a day or two!

Although it’s website isn’t the prettiest and most practical layout, it’s prices are pretty low and has a huge collection of all the possible nail polish brands (from OPI, Essie, Deborah Lippmann, Butter London, China Glaze, ZOYA, Orly, you name it). I wouldn’t say they have the lowest prices, but they are reasonable and better than you will find at Shoppers Drug Mart, a dollar cheaper than WalMart/Target and definitely has more colours and stock than the aforementioned stores.

My only issue is that some of their most popular polishes are out of stock and you will have to wait (indeterminately) for them to re-stock. Thus, I couldn’t buy any of the Deborah Lippmann polishes I was falling head over heels for, like this Across the Universe polish.

For each polish, the site also gives you a run-down on the collection, size, product details, product reviews, and my favourite – pictures for you to click on so you can see how the polish really looks like on the nails.

Overall, I would give this a 8/10, they can improve with a better website, more stock of popular polishes and better packaging. I would definitely repurchase if they continue to have lower prices and more stock than my local stores.

Let’s move on to the polishes I bought.

First, the package came in a small plain cardboard box, with some white foam nibblets in the box. I would have taken a picture, but it wasn’t pretty enough and I was at the post office, too awkward. The polishes were wrapped in pairs in the ever fun bubble wrap. The bubble wrap packages were stapled, so be careful not to make those staples a projectile while you break open the packages. The polishes were not damaged, so I assume the packaging was safe enough. You can be the judge for this:

DSC_0903 DSC_0904

I bought one colour from the following collections: Zoya Pixie Dust, OPI Skyfall, OPI Liquid Sand, Essie Summer 2013. They ended up being an array of the rainbow and all have sparkles, but they are perfect for this season’s bright colours! The gold one is by far my favourite as it comes off as true gold colour and it makes you nails look like they are foiled with liquid gold, simply stunning!

DSC_0924 DSC_0906 DSC_0907

Prices for each of the nail polishes are as follows:

GOLDEN EYE BY OPI $8.95 (liquid gold)

The liquid sand by OPI goes on really smoothly and I only needed one coat. It’s one of those polishes that you can just leave it plain and it still looks as stellar as any design. The Zoya and Essie polishes I have yet to try, but the Essie looked very smooth and thick enough for one coat only. Here’s how I did my nails with the Golden Eye and Tiffany Case polishes and a touch of “Where’s my Chauffeur”. I think I need to learn how to colour WITHIN the lines…

DSC_0921 DSC_0908

All in all I love my purchases and would repurchase with Nail Polish Canada.

A quick tip when buying nail polishes, obviously you don’t want anyone to have used your polish before, but to check, try to open the bottle in the store. If it’s very hard for you to open or after you open it, you see a bit of dried polish on the rim of the opening, then you should put that bottle down and try another one.

Also, if you don’t know what the latest nail colours and collections are the site has a page dedicated for this:

Let me know what your experience with Nail Polish Canada is, what colours you would get from these collections and what you thought of my purchase. As for me, I already have my eye on the Butter London Summer Holiday Collection!

HAUL: ShoeDazzle & Aldo

So many SHOES!

Recently aside from my lipstick craze, I was on the hunt for some perfect summer shoes. I ended buying 7 pairs of shoes, but I hope that’s the end of this shoe craze. Otherwise, my measly shoe rack at residence will actually break this time. My excuse is that these shoes will actually last me through the spring, summer and fall seasons, but obviously I know that deep down I will buy another pair of shoes if I see the “perfect” FALL shoes. Okay no more of my nonsense shopaholic desires and back to the reason why you are here, my shoe hauls. This post will mostly be filled with pictures of these beautiful finds, but I will also talk about my experience online shopping with ShoeDazzle and Aldo. As well some outfit ideas for my favourite pairs of shoes. LEGO!

This Californian shoe company headed by celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe has the latest styles for every type of female at affordable prices ($30-$50). When you sign up for their email subscription, they will personalize showrooms for you each month based on the quiz you completed at the beginning. If the showroom is not to your liking, you can browse through the many various styles they have available online. For me, I would place this as a cheaper version of ShoeMint, a compatible competitor to JustFab and a multi-faceted form of Steve Madden.

Overall: 7.5/10

ShoeDazzle two types of membership, VIP or Non-VIP, VIP Membership requires a $9.95 fee each month, so you have to remind yourself each month if you want to opt out for that month. The benefit of VIP are free (or for Canada $5 off) shipping for your whole purchase, lower prices and the $9.95 fee you pay can be spent on your purchase for that month or saved for a future purchase. I opted into the VIP plan as the amount of discounts (approx. $3 per pair of shoes and $5 off shipping) they offered covered more than the $9.95 membership fee.

Since my purchase was over $100, the shipment took much longer to deliver to me as it was held at customs for over a week. I was frustrated as not only did I have to wait longer for my shoes, but I had to pay 15% taxes on top of my initial online order when I went to pickup my shoes. Thus a word of caution, read the small font at the bottom of each site’s shipping description, you may have to pay extra fees and taxes. Especially when orders are over $100 and shipping internationally, hidden fees are inevitable. This is my sole reason why I would not likely shop again with ShoeDazzle, the high shipping flat cost is large and would encourage me to buy more at once to minimize overall shipping costs, but those hidden fees greatly discourages me from buying more than two pairs of shoes.

Aside from this major problem of mine, the shoes are as I expected in terms of design, heel height and fit. For shoe size, I used the same size as I would at any old shoe store and they fit like a glove… on my feet that is. The soles of the shoes have not rubbed off yet; the grip on the soles are standard; the materials of the shoes are standard, however, initial wear of a few of the shoes give off a fake plastic smell, but after some wear, the smell goes away. These shoes are great for this season and I’m glad I tried ShoeDazzle out after signing up for their emails for over 2 years, but until I’m not a poor student who can’t pay for heavy shipping fees, I won’t be going back. Time for pics of the shoes!

Aldo is a Canadian Brand Name that you can see in almost every shopping mall in Canada, or at least Ontario. I can almost always find a shoe, bag or accessory that I would love to buy when I walk into the store. Once in a while, their online site offers sales for shoes that may not be found in each store, at times like these, I would rather   buy the shoes online and secure a shoe in my size. If I receive the shoe and do not like the design, fit or material I can always return it at the store in the local mall. Shoes can run from 30% to 70% off during its online sales. My recent finds are not meant for the hot sandal weather but are perfect styles for the spring and fall. They also give me a bit of height without being 5″+, so I can walk to school or work in these.

Before this purchase, I have shopped online at ALDO on three other occasions, so my shopping experience was pretty standardized, here’s a quick recap. Also, for those in Canada, shopping at ALDO will not incur extra taxes and fees for you!

How to Style

Now that I’ve bought all these shoes, how can I wear them?

Let’s try styling my favourite pairs, the sneaker wedge and the military booties!

(DSC_0412) #1 sneaker wedges outfit

Styling for a casual day.

For the sneaker wedges, you can pair any school outfit or casual day outfit. The best combo would be whatever pant colour that matches your shoes to elongate those beautiful legs of yours. For me, since my shoes are white and beige, I would pair shorts of any colour, white pants or khakis. The top can be any blouse, sweater or tee, whatever floats your boat.

(DSC_0422) #1 military boots outfit

Time to rock out in those boots!

These shoes also go with almost any outfit, but the best would be to roughen up a girly dress or blouse-skirt combo. I also like pairing military boots with outfits that already have a bit of punk-edge in it. Here, I paired my dark grey canvas vest from Forever21 with these boots to further elongate my figure. It kind of draw a line down towards my shoes. Oh and don’t forget a punch of retro and colour in your outfit with spunky sunglasses like these mint ones from ALDO.
